Completed in 1997, Foster and Partner’s new headquarters for Commerzbank built upon the experience gained from their earlier ground-breaking projects for Willis Faber in Ipswich, and the Hongkong Bank to reinterpret the modern office tower. Here is a building flooded with daylight that, for much of the time, enjoys the benefits of natural ventilation, even at the top-most floors. Though a deep-plan building, its full-height central atrium and associated four-storey-high landscaped gardens — evenly distributed over the height of the building — afford every office a clear view of the outside world through windows that can be opened whenever conditions allow.
